JALPAIGURI: Ten students from Dinhata Soni Debi Jain High School in Cooch Behar made it to the top 10 of the merit list of Higher Secondary this year. This has brought cheers to the residents of the small hamlet in Cooch Behar, who celebrated the occasion with great fervour.
Of the 10 toppers, Adisha Debsharma scored the highest — 498 out of 500 — in HS this year. Daughter of primary school teacher Tapan Debsharma, Adisha was always serious about her studies. She had scored 678 in Madhyamik from Gopal Nagar High School in Dinhata. “I was confident of doing well, but never expected to top the list with 498 marks. I will either pursue my higher studies in maths or engineering,” said Adisha, who scored a perfect 100 in English, maths, physics and chemistry. She got 98 in biology and 96 in Bengali.
The eighteen-year-old girl recounted how frustration gripped her when the schools were closed down during the pandemic.
As the news of Adisha’s success reached the hamlet bordering Bangladesh, hundreds of people came out on the road, played with abir and burst crackers to celebrate the moment.
“This is a great moment. Not only Adisha, our other students also should be praised,” said Pintu Karmakar, headmaster of the school.
“Whatever I do, I will always be honest. And with a portion of my earnings, I want to help out street kids,” Adisha said. “She will pursue her own dreams. As parents, we want to see her established in her life,” said Tapan, her father.
