West Belfast boxing club to benefit from funding boost

A West Belfast boxing club is set to benefit from a significant funding boost.

St Michael's ABC has received £4,880 from the Whitemountain Programme which will go towards the purchase of new equipment.

The Poleglass gym is a fantastic commodity in the local area, helping boxers at various levels as well as providing community fitness and exercise programmes.

St Michael's will be able to purchase new gloves and head guards, along with three rowing machines.

Breedon Ireland’s Whitemountain Programme provides funding for community amenity and biodiversity projects within 15 miles of Mullaghglass landill site through the Landfill Communities Fund.

To date over £8.5million has been allocated to almost 250 projects. These range from sports facilities to community halls, and from wildflower meadows to play areas.

St Michael's boxing coach Joe Pollock said: "Now we're out of lockdown we're really keen to get our activities up and running again and get the local community, particularly young people, back into the Club.

"This new equipment will be a real boost, and we'd like to thank the Whitemountain Programme for their continued support."

Richard Rogers from Groundwork Northern Ireland added: "This is the second award we've made to St Michael's through the Whitemountain Programme and we're delighted to be able to help them upgrade their equipment.

"We know how important it is for sports clubs to have quality facilities if they're to attract new members and retain existing ones.

Russell Drew from the Whitemountain Programme also said: "The Whitemountain Programme has invested over £8.5 million in community amenity and biodiversity projects since it was established in 2007.

"Although this is a modest award we know how important it will be to the Club and we're very pleased to be able to support them again.

"With the forthcoming closure of Mullaghglass landfill site there will only be two further rounds of funding, so please check out the fund guidelines and, if your project is eligible, we'd be delighted to receive an application."
