Wesley Sneijder stunned by Manchester United’s pursuit of Wout Weghorst: ‘It must be a stunt’

Wesley Sneijder has delivered a damning verdict on Manchester United’s interest in Wout Weghorst.

The striker, currently on loan at Bestikas, is a target for United and they are pushing to seal a move for the Dutchman this month as they look to bolster their options up front following Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure.

The club are hoping to reach an agreement with Burnley and Bestikas over terminating his current loan, but the Turkish side continue to maintain that they will now allow the 30-year-old to leave.

Weghorst managed just two goals in 20 Premier League appearances for Burnley last season, though has picked up his goalscoring form for Besiktas and scored twice for the Netherlands in their World Cup quarter-final defeat to Argentina in Qatatr.

The second of those came from a clever free-kick routine to send the match to extra-time, but Sneijder has warned United that the other Premier League sides will be ready for whatever Weghorst has to offer.

“I think they’ve seen the trick with the free kick (against Argentina at the World Cup), so they don’t fall for that in England anymore,” Sneijder told VP.

“In terms of a striker, is he really someone United are waiting for? I don’t think so.

“They still have 300 of those in the Premier League. It must be a stunt. This really can’t be true.”
