Wesley Fofana appears to rubbish Enzo Maresca's season-ending injury claim

Wesley Fofana appears to have sensationally rubbished Enzo Maresca’s claim that the Chelsea defender will miss the rest of the season with a hamstring injury.

The Frenchman has not played football since picking up a hamstring issue in Chelsea’s 3-0 win over Aston Villa at the start of December.

Blues boss Enzo Maresca initially ruled Fofana out for a month before their draw with Crystal Palace. However, Maresca then revealed the defender ‘could miss the rest of the season’.

“We don’t know exactly,” Maresca said when asked about Fofana’s injury. “But having a test, we realised it was worst than what we thought at the beginning. It is hamstring and unfortunately, we are going to lose him for a while.”

However, reports from French outlet L’Equipe claimed Chelsea’s medical team suggested Fofana underwent surgery for the hamstring issue.

Surgery would rule Fofana out for at least three months. Fofana is also said to be against the idea of going under the knife.

Wesley Fofana Injury Update: Defender Appears To Rubbish Maresca’s Season-Ending Claim

Days after Maresca’s season-ending injury claim, it appears Fofana has responded to a fan on Instagram claiming it isn’t true.

After a fan account sent the injury update to what appears to be Fofana’s official Instagram account, Fofana seemingly responded in French: “It’s not true!

“I’m not out for the rest of the season, I don’t know why he [Maresca] said that. I will be back in 4-6 weeks.”

Josh Acheampong Impresses In Fofana’s Absence

While the confusion will not look good from a Chelsea fan’s point of view, one positive from the situation was youngster Josh Acheampong stepping up to ease the Blues’ defensive injury woes.

The 18-year-old impressed in Chelsea’s draw with Palace and received praise from Maresca afterwards.

“Josh, for me, can be a top player for this club but he needs the right path, the right moment; for young players, you need to decide which moment.

“Even if we don’t decide to buy players or sell players because Josh has shown he is good. We already knew Josh was good enough. Probably with Wes and Benoit [Badiashile] injuries, we will see if something is going to happen.”
