Wembley Stadium have clarified that surplus beer being put into a plastic container was not served to a spectator during Saturday night's WBC world heavyweight bout between Tyson Fury and Dillian Whyte after a video went viral showing a member of catering staff scooping excess drink into a cup.
The video, posted on Twitter yesterday afternoon, has racked up more than one million views. "Who had a pint at @wembleystadium last night," it read, followed by three green-faced emojis. But a Wembley spokesman has confirmed to the Mirror that the server was unblocking a drip tray and then discarding the beer.
"We are aware of a video on social media of a kiosk at Wembley Stadium," he said. "We can confirm that the staff member was emptying a blocked drip tray and discarding the content."
Fury knocked Whyte out with a remarkable uppercut in the final second of the sixth round and immediately afterwards said that he now intends to retire.
"I promised my lovely wife Paris that after the Wilder Three fight that would be it. I meant it," he said. "But I got offered a fight at Wembley and I thought I owed it to the fans, to every person in the United Kingdom, to come here and fight. Now it’s all done I have to be a man of my word and I think this is it."
But that has not stopped speculation growing that Fury could end up fighting Oleksandr Usyk or Anthony Joshua later this year to become the undisputed world champion.
More than 90,000 people attended the fight at Wembley and Fury serenaded the crowd afterwards with his now customary singing of Don McLean's American Pie.
Fury also revealed that he told Whyte that he would become world champion down the line. "I spoke to him after the fight," Fury said. "I gave him a kiss and a cuddle and told him he will be a world champion one day. People will say Dillian Whyte is s***, please put a pair of gloves on and we'll see if they s*** themselves."
