Welsh rugby player lands astonishing drop goal from inside his own half with help from Storm Dudley

A Welsh rugby player landed an astonishing drop goal on Wednesday night, with a little help from Storm Dudley.

Swansea University outside-half Gwyn Parks' moment of audacious brilliance helped his team to an historic first ever victory over Cardiff Met in the BUCS Super Rugby competition.

The match was played in shocking conditions as Storm Dudley battered south Wales, but the ferocious wind eventually came in handy.

After playing against the gusts in the first half, Parks saw his chance to bring the scores to within a point at 17-16 in the second-half, launching the drop goal from a distance of well over 50 metres inside his own half.

It has been described as the longest drop goal in BUCS history, and there can't have been many longer anywhere.

A dramatic late try secured a 23-17 win for Swansea, sparking wild scenes of celebrations among the players.

Cardiff Met head of rugby Dan Milton said of the surprise defeat: "It was going to happen at some point. It's the first time we've lost a Welsh derby in BUCS Super Rugby. We're there to be shot at and we're excited to play them next year and put it right."

Cardiff Met have hit the national headlines in recent times, with England calling up three former students to their Six Nations squad.

Harlequins duo Alex Dombrandt and Luke Northmore, along with London Irish back rower Tom Pearson are all part of the group, with Eddie Jones describing the University as "a popular breeding ground for Test match rugby players".
