Welsh MS Paul Davies diagnosed with cancer

A member of the Welsh Parliament has announced that he has been diagnosed with cancer. Paul Davies, Member of the Senedd for Preseli Pembrokeshire, confirmed the news on Thursday.

Mr Davies, who has been the MS for the west Wales constituency since 2007, is a former leader of the Welsh Conservatives. He said that he will continue to carry out his duties to the best of his ability and urged people to “listen to your body”. His announcement comes after a diagnosis for prostate cancer was confirmed and after he met with a consultant to discuss treatment. In a statement Mr Davies said: “This week I met my consultant to discuss treatment options following a recent diagnosis of prostate cancer. I’ll soon be starting treatment, which will be ongoing over the coming months.

“The service I’ve received so far has been second to none and I’m very grateful to the NHS staff that are looking after me for their advice and support. As I begin that treatment process I want to remind everyone that it’s so important to listen to your body and contact your GP if you feel that something isn’t quite right.

“There is a wealth of information and guidance out there about prostate cancer so please take a moment to remind yourself of the symptoms and the risk factors. In the meantime my office remains open and I will continue to carry out my duties to the best of my ability.”

Among those offering support to Mr Davies were Ceredigion MS and presiding officer of the Senedd, Elin Jones. She tweeted: “Paul, cofion gorau atat. A cymer dy amser i wella’n llawn (Paul, best wishes to you, and take your time to make a full recovery)." Huw Irranca-Davies, MS For Ogmore, also shared his support by saying: “Wishing you all the very best with the treatment Paul.”

The news about Mr Davies come just two days after another Welsh politician, Kevin Brennan, confirmed that he had undergone surgery for prostate cancer. Mr Brennan, the Labour MP for Cardiff West since 2001, said on Tuesday that he was “recuperating very well and should require no further treatment”.

He too thanked the NHS, adding: “I want to thank the superb NHS Wales doctors, nurses and staff at University Hospital of Wales for their incredible skill, professionalism, dedication and humanity – you are the best of us! Diolch yn fawr iawn!”
