Welsh city named best place in the UK to find a job

A small Welsh city has been named as the best place in the UK to find a job.

St Asaph in Denbighshire was named the UK's 'Career Capital'.

Despite being the second smallest city in Britain in terms of both population and urban area, with a population of 3,355, St Asaph had the highest number of jobs per capita with eight available jobs per person.

Of the 1,630 working population, there were around 900 trade jobs available in the city.

St Davids in Pembrokeshire, Britain's smallest city by population with just 1,600 residents was the second Welsh city to feature on the list ranking tenth on the listing.

The top 10 UK cities to find a job were:

  1. St Asaph, Denbighshire - 7.8

  2. Wells, Somerset - 4.1

  3. Ripon, North Yorkshire - 2.0

  4. St Albans, Hertfordshire - 1.7

  5. Ely, Cambridgeshire - 1.4

  6. Chichester, West Sussex - 1.2

  7. Westminster, London - 1.2

  8. Lichfield, Staffordshire - 0.8

  9. Salisbury, Wiltshire - 0.8

  10. St Davids, Pembrokeshire - 0.7

The listing was compiled by MaterialsMarket.com, a marketplace connecting professional and hobbyist builders with materials suppliers.

The platform said it conducted the research due to the widening skills gap in the trade industry and to highlight the UK's job hotspots during the cost of living crisis.

Recent research revealed that nearly half (44%) of tradespeople experienced staff shortages in 2021, with one of the main reasons being a lack of skilled workers.

Londonderry in Northern Ireland was the city with the least job vacancies with a total of 388 jobs or 0.0053 jobs per capita.

It found that Westminster was the city with the most opportunities for tradespeople, offering more than 14,000 available roles.

As well as the number of total vacancies, the research also showed the number of roles available in different pay brackets.

Westminster and St Albans topped the list of locations with the most job vacancies paying more than £35,000 per annum.

There are currently over 160,000 trade jobs available in the UK with the average salary in construction around £37,105, more than £5,000 than the median average salary for all workers in the UK.
