'Weird noise' heard across Southport

A "weird" noise has been heard across one part of Merseyside.

Families in one part of Southport struggled to sleep last night as a loud noise echoed around Kew. The noise, which people put down to the United Utilities facility on Bracebridge Drive, could be heard across the area into the early hours of today.

The noise is believed to have stopped at around 1am before restarting at 6.30am.

One person initially posted in a local Facebook group about the "weird noise" at 8.39pm yesterday.

They posted: "Anyone else hear a weird noise outside? It has been going on ages can’t work out what it is. [It] sort of sounds like a hoover but louder."

People commented in their dozens as speculation started over what the noise could possibly be.

One person responded just after 9pm: "It was a gully sucker at the pumping station on Bracebridge [Drive], they've finally gone, been there for hours too."

The same person said the workmen were back ten minutes later and the noise went on until 1am.

Another person commented: "Stopped at 1am, restarted at 6.30am."

A United Utilities spokesperson said: “Our engineers are currently completing some urgent repair work on the sewer network, which has caused a temporary spike in noise from the pumping station.

“We will monitor the situation to keep the noise to an absolute minimum and we aim to have the repair complete by Friday (11/03).

“We are sorry for any disruption caused.”
