NEW YORK — Weezer’s Broadway gig is over before it even started.
The pop punk band’s five-night residency, scheduled to begin next month, has been canceled due to “low ticket sales and unbelievably high expenses,” according to the band.
“I’m very sorry to be telling you this now after we’ve already invested so much time, thought, and emotion. Extra apologies to those of you who cleared schedules and made travel plans to be with us,” frontman Rivers Cuomo wrote on the band’s official Discord server, according to Pitchfork.
“I loved where we were going and I hope we can find a way to resurrect our vision.”
It’s unclear how many tickets had already been sold or how many the promoters expected to sell.
A spokesperson for the band did not immediately return a request for comment from the Daily News Thursday.
The residency, announced in June, was tied to Weezer’s “SZNZ” project, four EPs each corresponding to a different season. Each night at the Broadway Theatre, the band was to play one “season,” along with “a unique set of Weezer classics, many of which have not been played in years,” according to the initial announcement.
