Week ahead weather forecast for the Great North Run 2022

Come rain or shine, runners will be out in force on Sunday, September 11, to take part in the Great North Run. Over 60,000 people have signed up for the run with thousands more expected to spectate.

Last year the heavens opened and runners found themselves in the middle of a downpour so many will be hoping for sunshine this year. While clear sunny skies are not on the forecast, neither are showers.

Although weather forecasts are subject to change and predicting so early can be difficult, AccuWeather is saying there is only a 25% chance of rainfall all day. In the week leading up to the Great North Run, the Met Office is also predicting little chance of rain so the track should be clear of puddles.

On Friday, September 9, the Met Office has forecast a 30% chance of precipitation in Newcastle, this is set to continue into the weekend. The temperature drops throughout the week, settling around the late teens as we head into the weekend.

The weather in South Shields, where the race ends, looks to be shaping up to be similarly warm with little chance of rain too. Although it appears to be warm weather in the late teens to early twenties, there is set to be winds of around 15mph which will make the temperature feel closer to 15 Celsius.

For people hoping to attend the race, as participants or spectators, the weather should hold off heavy downpours until after the Great North Run is over. It is best to keep checking the forecast as it will get more accurate the closer to the weekend it is.
