Wee Ginger Dug highlights importance of indy voices as fundraiser smashes target

THE Wee Ginger Dug Blogger has smashed his annual fundraising target with weeks to go.

Paul Kavanagh, the writer behind the Wee Ginger Dug Blog and The National’s daily newsletter, has reached his target in just 10 days, raising more than £6000.

The pro-Scottish independence blog is Kavanagh’s (below) full-time job – and it remains one of the original pro-indy blogs to still be running following the referendum.

(Image: Paul Kavanagh) Kavanagh suffered a stroke in 2020 and is permanently disabled, having lost the ability to drive, write with his dominant hand and walk unaided.

He holds a fundraiser for the Wee Ginger Dug every year – but increased it slightly this year due to rising costs.

The fundraiser launched last Monday and reached its target on Thursday, gathering donations from his GoFundMe page, his Ko-Fi page and PayPal.

Kavanagh thanked his readers for their support as he said: “I must be doing something right, and whatever it is, I will keep on doing it for another year thanks to all the wonderful readers and supporters of this blog which has become a huge part of my life.”

Kavanagh told The National he was “always” nervous about launching the fundraiser.

He said: “I’m always really nervous about it because what I always say is I’m asking people to put their money where my mouth is – and also because I know that there are certain people who would gloat incredibly if it fell flat on its face.”

The Wee Ginger Dug was first launched in October 2013 and has grown a loyal audience – attracting the attention of The National’s founding editor, Richard Walker.

Kavanagh stressed he intends to keep advancing the case for independence at a time when much of the Scottish media takes an anti-independence stance.

He said: “I’m one of the few original pro-independence bloggers who’s still doing what they set out to do when they launched the blog.

“Other people have kind of got distracted and gone down rabbit holes, and I continue to focus on supporting pro-independence parties and making the case for Scottish independence.

“There’s so few of us. The Scottish media landscape is very heavily biased in favour of anti-independence voices and pro-independence voices really struggle to be heard.

“The only way that we can get a platform is to make it for ourselves.”
