‘Wee bear’ Rangers fan, 6, dies in drowning tragedy at hotel pool in Majorca

A six-year-old boy who drowned in a hotel swimming pool in Majorca has been named as young Rangers fan Corey Aughey.

The youngster, known as "wee bear" to his heartbroken family, died yesterday afternoon after tragedy struck at an unnamed hotel in the resort of Sa Coma.

His family confirmed he passed away last night after spending a few days in intensive care on life support.

Corey, from north Belfast, was on holiday with his family at the hotel, a short drive from the Love Island villa close to Sant Llorenc des Cardassar.

The alarm was sounded at around 5.30pm yesterday.

Local reports said his parents lost sight of him for a few minutes before he was spotted floating face-down in the pool.

Efforts to revive him at the scene proved unsuccessful.

The Majorca Daily Bulletin reported that lifeguards performed basic CPR for almost 30 minutes.

Island newspapers say the youngster was from Northern Ireland. Police could not be immediately reached this morning for comment.

Last month a British toddler drowning in a swimming pool accident on the Costa Blanca.

Freddie Joseph Briggs died in the pool at his parents' home in the village of Aigues near Benidorm on May 25, leading the local council to declare three days of mourning.

Tributes were paid to the 19-month-old boy at his funeral service at a church in Belfast where he was christened before he was buried at a nearby cemetery.

Father Thomas McGlynn told mourners at the service the youngster bought happiness to those around him and enjoyed his short life "to the very full."

The child's dad Marc Briggs, known to pals as Briggsy and thought to be from Mansfield, Notts, and Belfast-born mum Jane Mohan had moved to the Costa Blanca shortly before the tragedy.

Aigues Town Hall said: "The news of the death yesterday of the little boy Freddie Joseph Briggs has saddened and moved locals living in Aigues.

"As a show of our pain and solidarity with the child's parents and other relatives, we are declaring three days of mourning starting tomorrow."

That tragedy at the end of May came on the back of two others in the area involving British nationals.

Expat Ingrid Dale, 67, originally from Dereham in Norfolk, died after being stung by a wasp in a Costa Blanca restaurant on May 9.

A police investigation into the tragedy is under way.
