Weather update: One dead in lightning strike

One person died in a lightning strike in Koothuparamba, Kannur, as summer rainfall continued to lash parts of the State.

The Koothuparamba police identified the victim as Twinsley Edwards, 48, of Mangattidam.

Ten women complained of physical discomfort following a lightning strike at Thonnackal. They sought medical assistance at the local primary health centre. One woman, identified as Rajani, was rushed to a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram.

Seven southern districts of Kerala have been put on yellow alert on Saturday for isolated heavy rainfall (6.4 cm to 11.5 cm in a 24 hour-period).

The districts are Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, and Idukki. On Friday, nine districts were on yellow alert and Pathanamthitta on orange alert.

Kerala and Lakshadweep can expect scattered to fairly widespread rainfall till Tuesday under the influence of a trough that runs from southeast Madhya Pradesh to south interior Karnataka above mean sea level. A cyclonic circulation lies over the central parts of south Bay of Bengal. The cyclonic circulation over Sri Lanka and its neighbourhood also persists.

The Thiruvananthapuram district administration has prohibited fishing activity as strong winds are expected along and off the Kerala coast.
