Weather: Londoners brace for 'Arctic chill' as snow and freezing temperatures sweep through capital

Londoners will be forced to wrap themselves in their warmest garb as snowy conditions and freezing temperatures sweep through the capital this week.

The BBC weather service says the capital will be hit by a snow shower from 1pm to midnight on Wednesday afternoon, with temperatures barely creeping above 1C. It comes as the Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for large parts of the UK.

England additionally has a cold weather warning until Thursday, with over-65s and those with health conditions advised to take extra care.

“It will be very cold throughout,” the Met Office said of the week to come for London

“It will be dry and bright Tuesday. Chance of some rain or snow along the south coast overnight. Becoming dry and sunny on Wednesday and Thursday. Widespread overnight frosts.”

The Met Office has yellow weather warnings of snow and ice in place for much of the north of Scotland until 11.59pm on Monday.

The warning spans Stonehaven and Aberdeen in the east to Skye and the Western Isles.

All parts of Scotland north of these areas are likely to be affected, with temperatures as low as minus 4C expected.

The Met Office warned travel disruption is possible with some roads and railways affected, and longer journey times by road, bus and train are likely.

It also warned of icy patches on roads, pavements and cycle paths, and said there is a small chance that power cuts will occur.

Mobile phone services may also be affected, and snow-covered roads may lead to stranded vehicles.

The Met Office has also issued a yellow weather warning of snow and ice for Northern Ireland early next week.

The warning comes into force on Monday at 3am and runs until 11.59pm on Monday.

Northern areas could see more significant snowfall on Tuesday, while there is a small chance of snow in the south on Wednesday.Several London Underground lines were reporting delays on Sunday afternoon although this was not due to the weather.
