Weather forecast as temperatures plunge to -8C in Greater Manchester

People in Greater Manchester have woken up to temperatures of around -8C this morning, with another freezing cold day forecast.

The mercury will stay below freezing in our region all day today (Thursday), according to the Met Office. At 8am, the temperature was recorded as being -8C in some areas.

It will remain bitterly cold all morning, with the temperatures gradually only climbing to around -1C in the early afternoon. Into tonight, the mercury will drop again to -3C.

Forecasters predict that although it will be freezing cold, it is set to be a mostly sunny day in Greater Manchester today. No rainfall or snow showers are forecast for today.

The Met Office said the cold snap across the UK is set to continue until the weekend, before milder and wetter weather sweeps in. Chief forecaster Paul Gundersen said: "Over the last week, the UK has been held in a northerly airflow bringing cold, sometimes Arctic air, to the UK.

"We will still have this northerly influence to our weather patterns until the weekend, but then the cold conditions will lose exclusive dominance over the UK’s weather patterns and we will move into a regime where relatively mild and relatively cold conditions will vie for supremacy.

"We can expect changeable conditions with colder and milder air not too far away from our shores, but it does seem that the Atlantic ‘has woken up’ compared with recent days and will be a stronger influence, countering any further bouts of extreme cold conditions, although spells of further wintry weather remain possible through the rest of December."
