As the cost of living crisis continues to hit us all in every area of our lives, every penny counts when it comes to saving ourselves money. Being shrewd and saving cash where you can is at the forefront of most people's minds, and the decision on where to fill up your car with fuel is becoming more and more important.
But the question is where, as right now prices are seeming to fluctuate wildly.
We drove around Swansea to check out the prices being charged at ten different fuel stations on Thursday, July 28, and we discovered a huge difference in cost depending on where you visit. Unsurprisingly, the major supermarket stores across the city are offering the best prices, with the lowest we came across being 179.7 per litre of petrol at two stores, and 190.7 the cheapest for diesel.
At the opposite end of the spectrum, the highest priced fuel we discovered was 188.8 per litre of petrol and 196.8 per litre of diesel. The RAC said that across the UK, the latest average petrol price was 184.5 per litre, whilst the average cost for a litre of diesel was 193.9. It means two stations in Swansea surpass the national average for petrol prices, and three surpass the national average for diesel. You can let us know if you've found a cheap place to fill up in the comments section below.
The price you pay for petrol and diesel at the pumps is governed by wholesale fuel prices, which in turn, are affected by the global price of crude oil, supply and demand for crude oil, oil refinery production and capacity, the pound to dollar exchange rate, as refined fuel is sold in US dollars per metric tonne, distribution costs, the margin fuel retailers decide to take, fuel duty charged by the Government, currently 52.95p a litre and VAT charged at the end of every forecourt fuel transaction, currently at 20%.
We reported last week how drivers from "all over" had been flocking to Bailey's Garage in Brecon Road in Abergavenny after it started selling unleaded petrol for just 169p per litre. Later, people suggested they had been 'taken for mugs' by all the other garages charging much higher prices.
Here is a breakdown of the current prices for fuel in Swansea.
