We visited ten Edinburgh bars to see if they tracked and traced their customers

Over the weekend an alarming probe by the Sunday Mail revealed that one of the UK's largest pub chains failed to track and trace their customers at many of their venues.

Reporters visited seven JD Wetherspoons branches across the West of Scotland and the investigation revealed that only two of the pubs tracked and traced their customers.

The importance of implementing the track and track system has been highlighted in Aberdeen, which has recently been placed back into lockdown due to an outbreak which was traced back to Hawthorn's Bar.

Over 700 hundred people were tracked and told to self-isolate after 134 positive cases of the virus were linked to the initial outbreak at the pub.

Concerned for the health and safety of Edinburgh, we decided to investigate if our bars are making sure they implement the track and trace system - and we were surprised with what we found.

We visited ten bars around Edinburgh's George Street, Rose Street an Edinburgh Waverley.

First, we headed over to George Street and visited the two Wetherspoons bars, The Standing Order and The Alexander Graham Bell.

In both pubs, there was a member of staff guarding the door and customers were required to either scan their phone or fill in a sheet of paper with their details on it before entering.

We then had a nosey in some of the other popular bars on George Street including Tiger Lilly and Slug and Lettuce and we were delighted to see that they also had members of staff at the door taking contact tracing details.

We then headed over to Rose Street where many people were sat outside the pubs, enjoying drinks in the sunshine and 50 per cent off their bill through the Eat Out to Stay Out initiative.

The first bar we sat down at was the Rose and Crown where we were given a menu, as soon as the waitress returned to take the order, we were asked for our contact details.

Checking out some of the other bars on our Rose Street Crawl, we could see that customers were being asked for their track and trace details before they were even seated in the majority of bars.

We visited The Rosehip, Rose Street Brewery, Milnes Bar and the Black Rose Tavern, and all of them were implementing the track and trace system.

Lastly, we headed for a drink at a sports bar outside Waverley Station called Belushi's and this was the only pub out of the ten we visited where we didn't give any of our details.

The server explained that when you log on to the wifi you are asked to fill out your details and this connects you to the track and trace system, but, as we never used the Wifi, no details were ever given.

We were relieved to see that nine out of ten of the bars that were visited in the capital were ensuring that the track and trace system was implemented.
