We visited Edinburgh pub claiming to be 'Scotland's smallest' and all was not as it seemed

We love to have a wander and a drink or two in the capital, and thankfully the city is filled with great pubs.

It's unusual for us to stumble on one we haven't come across before and for some strange reason the Wee Pub in the Grassmarket has seemed to pass us by, that was until recently when our curiosity got the better of us after coming across it online.

Claiming to be 'Scotland's smallest pub', the Wee Pub is found smack bang in the middle of the busy Grassmarket so why have we never noticed it before? Perhaps it was due to its stature or the fact you have to walk up a close to get it, or even that it's sandwiched between several other more famous and boisterous pubs.

The bar can only hold up to 20 people (SM)

In fact, as Edinburgh Live and no shortage of bemused tourists were quick to find out, it is in fact a wee bit of craic by the team at Biddy Mulligans, as you wander along the close and into the 'Wee pub', you learn it is in fact part of the bigger pub next door.

And though the pub is indeed wee, it wasn't functioning as a bar when we got there in fact we had to go through the doors to grab a drink.

Where we found the welcoming bar staff of Biddy's only happy to chat and serve, revealing that though it was a functioning bar with its own licence the team in Biddy's actually hire it out for events and use it as a snug when the bigger pub gets busy.

So there you have it, 'Scotland's Smallest Pub' or a clever tourist trap, we'll let you decide.

You can learn more about the Wee Pub on the Biddy's website.
