We've been saying Aldi and Lidl wrong for years, say supermarkets

You don't have to look far to find a Lidl or Aldi near to where you live.

The supermarket giants have been taking the UK by storm in recent years and provide amazing value for money on hundreds of items for the big shop.

But it turns out many of us have been pronouncing the two names all wrong. And the supermarkets themselves have clarified how they should really be said.

According to Kent Live, some have been elongating the first vowel on Aldi, so it will sound like 'all-di' which the supermarket says is wrong.

But fear not, Aldi have been able to rectify the mistakes we have been making and revealed how to correctly pronounce the name of the store.

According to the retailer, the first vowel of 'a' should be pronounce much harsher, similar to how we would say 'Al' in Al Pacino, for example.

Lidl's pronunciation is a little more complex. The way the supermarket's name is said depends on where you are.

In Germany the brand's name is pronounced, Lee-dil, similar to the name Leisel.

Whilst in the UK, the retailer says the name should be pronounced with a short, crisp 'li' at the start of the name, similar to the word little.

The German supermarkets have been growing at a rapid rate and were amongst a handful of supermarkets to see an increase in sales over the Christmas period.

But it was Marks & Spencer that was voted the UK’s favourite in-store supermarket despite a strong showing from discounters Aldi and Lidl as consumers face up to the cost-of-living crisis.
