'We've always disliked them' - Eddie Howe, Dan Burn and Callum Wilson react to Man Utd win

Eddie Howe has expressed his delight after Newcastle United's 2-0 win over Manchester United at St James' Park.

The Magpies gained revenge for their Carabao Cup final defeat at Wembley on Tyneside and climbed to third place as part of the bargain. For Howe, he was simply delighted his team came good when it mattered.

Howe said: “We’ve had moments since the World Cup where we haven’t scored the goals we maybe should have. The first half was another example of that, where we were frustrated not to lead.

"We needed patience and felt if we performed the same way in the second half the goal would come, and it did."

His sentiments were backed up by striker and goalscorer, Callum Wilson who said: “Yes, we were disappointed with the final. We know that had gone but it left a sour taste in our mouth.

"It was one of those things we had to put right, especially at home in front of our fans. We were fantastic, solid at the back, and managed to get two goals."

Meanwhile defender Dan Burn weighed in after the game: “It’s really special. For a long time, we’ve always disliked Manchester United. "We’ve owed them one this season, so it was good to get the win today.

“As a Newcastle fan we were desperate to get the win. "Over the seasons this [fixture] has always been one where we want to beat Manchester United. It was a great performance from the lads, I’m glad to get the win and the clean sheet."
