We try outlandish cakes from Nottinghamshire corner shop - and now understand the hype

A few weeks ago I visited one of Mansfield's highest rated corner shops and encountered friendly staff, an attractive setting and an owner who cared deeply about her business and her customers needs. It was easy to see why it had garnered such a good reputation.

When I read the reviews before I decided to head to Justina Corner Shop I noticed that one item kept being spoken of in high regard - the cakes. So, never one to shy away from an opportunity to try some cake (or any food for that matter) I thought I'd see what all the fuss was about.

I went for the Honey cake, or Medaus pyragas, which had been delivered over 1,500 miles from Latvia like the other cakes that owner Ina Strovalda sells. They were delicious. The crumbly base was a melt-in-your-mouth experience which was made all the more satisfying by the taste of honey on your tongue - if you're going to get the Medaus pyragas treat yourself to a tea or coffee with it.

And if you think that sounds nice, wait until you get to the middle - there's a lot going on there. The rich centre was packed with flavour, cream and, again, a wonderful taste of honey.

Ina, 45, who moved to England from Latvia 17 years ago, and her Lithuanian husband own the store and it sells just about everything. Once in England, the sought-after cakes complete the final stage of the bake when they arrive in Mansfield and it's certainly something which has proven to be a hit with customers.

One happy customer wrote on Google Reviews: "Delicious cakes freshly baked in shop."

Another wrote: "The best Latvian grocery store in Mansfield." I couldn't agree with you more, Mr Visnsakovs. Now that I've tried the Medaus pyragas, it's on to the next one.

The cake cost £3.99 - I would rate it nine out of ten.
