We tried 'value' toilet roll from Aldi, Tesco and Lidl and two impressed us

Toilet roll is an every day essential that we just can't live without, yet some of the prices for luxury brands are like literally throwing your money down the toilet.

Take an Andrex Classic Clean Toilet Roll for example, it'll set shoppers back £5.60 for eight rolls, and if you're getting those on a weekly basis for a family the cost can really add up. There are plenty of different brands of toilet roll out there, with some forking out more money than others on the staple item.

Many shoppers have a preconception that 'value' toilet roll is bad quality, but is that really the case? Many supermarkets are now offering their own brand toilet roll for shoppers trying to save money and we decided to put them to the test.

With the cost of living crisis in full swing, every little helps in terms of saving money on a weekly shop. We've already tested cheese, baked beans, tea bags and washing up liquid to name a few, and now it's time to test the one thing we always need - loo roll!

Lidl Simply Toilet Tissue 6 Roll

I've never been to fussy with toilet roll if I'm being totally honest, to me, it all does the same job so I'm not particularly bothered getting value toilet roll. Usually, I go for Asda Shades, which is always absolutely fine for me.

I visited my local Lidl to see what their cheapest toilet roll was, and was shocked at the price (?) for 6 rolls. When you spend more on toilet roll, I do think you can tell, but I don't think it's particularly important so I don't usually fork out the cash.

The toilet roll was quite thin (Emily Sleight/ Liverpool ECHO)

Priced at £1.93, the 'Simply Toilet Tissue' gives you 6 jumbo rolls and 400 sheets and is described as having a 'double length'. The packaging was fairly basic but that didn't put me off.

My first impressions would be that the toilet roll overall felt very thin, almost like tissue paper, it was quite scratchy. When I tried to separate the paper from the roll, it kept ripping because it was so thin.

One thing I will say though, is that you certainly get a lot for the price, which outweighs the fact it might rip occasionally. I'd definitely be willing to make the swap if I had to, but for now I'll stick with my thicker Asda Shades.

Tesco Luxury Soft Toilet Tissue White 4 Roll

I recently visited my local Tesco store to see which toilet roll was available and found the stock lacking. With not much to choose from, I settled on the cheapest of the lot - Tesco’s Luxury Soft Toilet Tissue White 4 Roll.

Coming in at £1.80, this toilet roll is actually the cheapest available at Tesco, according to the retailer’s website. Even the product listed as an Aldi price match is 13p more expensive.

Tesco Luxury Soft Toilet Tissue White 4 Roll (Liverpool Echo)

The Luxury Soft Toilet Tissue White 4 Roll. consists of four rolls of two ply tissue. There is an average 220 sheets per roll, according to Tesco.

The packaging gave the product a luxury feel - just like the name said it was - and the paper itself was soft to the touch and features a delicate floral design. The roll lasted longer than I expected considering its relatively cheap price - in comparison to other Tesco toilet rolls.

Aldi’s Everyday Essentials Toilet Tissue

I had my doubts about trying a "value” toilet roll, as I assumed the quality would not be good at all. However, Aldi’s Everyday Essentials Toilet Tissue has proved me wrong.

Aldi sells a variety of toilet roll, but I opted for the cheapest I could find. The Everyday Essentials packet comes with six jumbo rolls consisting of 400 sheets and claims to last as long as 12 normal rolls. The packaging is fairly simple, and you can clearly see the toilet roll which I like as you can compare it to other brands on the shelf.

I was very impressed with the quality of toilet paper, as it wasn’t thin like I assumed it would be. The sheets were thick and tore off easily without ripping. Due to the size of the jumbo rolls, they did last longer than the ordinary sized ones I usually use.

Overall, I would definitely use Aldi’s Everyday Essentials Toilet Tissue again. Each roll lasted longer and the quality was just as good as my usual go-to toilet roll, plus it's cheaper!
