We tried the popular Edinburgh Indian restaurant Tuk Tuk and will definitely be back

We tried the popular Edinburgh Indian restaurant Tuk Tuk and will definitely be back

The restaurant is conveniently located next door to my favourite pub - The Brass Monkey on Drummond Street, so I have been excited to try it since they opened up at the end of last year.

Tuk Tuk joins a number of brilliant Asian restaurants in the Southside area including Mosque Kitchen, Solti a few doors up and Mother India.

The original branch in Tollcross has been popular with residents for years, winning awards in the past for its authentic Indian street food and has just opened in Southside.

The new Tuk Tuk restaurant is set to open on Drummond Street (Tuk Tuk)

Delicious favourites on the new menu include chicken lollipops, puri yoghurt bombs, and Bengali fish cakes. There are also many classic curries like the Bombay chilli chicken and railway station lamb curry.

Other dishes include the unauthentic chicken korma, a succulent dish with chicken pieces delicately flavoured in a silky coconut sauce and Rasti Ke Biryani - which is bone chicken biryani, just the way you would find it by the roadside.

Drinks include Thums Up - the cola of Bombay, sparkling Indian lemonade drinks, homemade lassi and delicious fruit coolers with mint and lime. There are no alcoholic drinks available but plenty of refreshing alternatives to complement your dinner.

Tuk Tuk doesn't sell alcohol but it's BYOB so you can bring beer or wine if you wish. We stuck to tap water as it was after work on a Thursday and saved the beer for the pub afterwards.

We went for a chicken tikka starter with fresh salad and yoghurt dip. This was absolutely mouth-watering and seasoned to perfection.

Naturally being the daredevil I am, I decided to go for the hottest curry on the menu and tried the Bombay Chilli Chicken which is hot spicy chicken cooked in herbs, and chillies tempered with garlic.

This was pretty spicy but had an enjoyable amount of spice and the chicken was juicy and tender.

This was paired with a garlic and cheese nan which had a really good amount of garlic and a thick texture perfect for soaking up the sauce.

We also tried a Peshwari nan and a Channa Masala which is chickpeas braised in tomato gravy to balance out the spice. The restaurant is tapas style so you are encouraged to order a few dishes to share and have a bit of everything.

The food was really quick and arrived within 20 minutes of ordering - which was ideal because we were both starving.

You can see into the kitchen from most seats in the restaurant which is nice, and the loud pop colours and cool interior design make it a really gorgeous place to enjoy your food.
