We tried the Nottinghamshire Fish and Chip shop named one of the best in the country

A family-run fish and chip shop in Nottinghamshire has ranked as one of the 50 best fish and chip 50 takeaways in the UK. Angells Fisheries, on Barnby Gate, Newark, is the oldest chippy in the town, dating back to 1905.

The takeaway was this week named one of the best in annual awards organised by Fry Magazine, so we decided to try the business ourselves. Angells Fisheries has a huge menu to offer customers, with plenty of classic options, such as fish, burgers and pies, as well as some more unusual options like a battered Mars Bar or battered Twix.

Not knowing where to start on this impressive menu I decided to order one of the lunchtime deals. The Mini Fish Special cost £5.30 and included fish, chips and your choice of sauce.

Where do you think is the best fish and chip shop? Let us know

General view of Angells Fisheries, Newark (Laycie Beck)

I went with baked beans, but there were other options available such as peas and gravy. The staff were so friendly and within minutes of arriving I was happily walking out with my order.

I was shocked at how large my portion was, but even more surprised at how good it was. The two pieces of fish I received were perfectly golden, the batter was crispy and the fish easily broke apart. The skin was still on the fish, and whilst I don't mind seeing the skin on my fish, I know for some people this can be a no-go.

The chips were also nice and crispy, and there was so many of them. Despite my best efforts I couldn't finish them, with there easily being enough chips there for two people to share. Everything was nice and hot, the fish tasted fresh and the chips weren't soggy so had definitely been made that day and also hadn't been sat for ages.

The chippy was also really easy to get to, and as it's located on the outskirts of Newark rather than the town centre there are plenty of places to park without having to pay for a space. As it's in a residential area I'm incredibly jealous of anyone who lives within walking distance to the shop, and have already decided I need to try one of their burgers and a battered Mars Bar on my next trip.
