We tried the Egyptian takeaway so good that people are travelling for miles just to eat there

A new takeaway in the heart of Liverpool's student area has started attracting customers from miles around - so we decided to see what all the fuss is about.

Located on Smithdown Road , Zel Zal Egyptian takeaway has only been open a few months and it's already built up a loyal following.

Egyptian food isn't exactly very common in Liverpool, but Zel Zal has managed to draw in both ex-pat customers and locals looking to try something new.

The food is so authentically Egyptian that it's even started attracting fans from other cities who drive miles just to try it.

One review for the south Liverpool takeaway posted by Mevish Ahmed said: "I came from Manchester with a group of friends to try Zel Zal. It is a very pretty place with great food and very friendly customer service.

"Highly recommend the falafel and the grilled chicken. Food was 10/10. It was definitely worth the travel."

If you pass the store on a Friday or Saturday night, it's always busy with customers waiting to collect their orders and the grill in constant action.

With this unassuming looking Smithdown take-away getting so much attention, we decided to head in and try it ourselves to see what all the fuss is about.

The first thing you need to know about Zel Zal is that you should expect a bit of a wait.

With a limited number of staff, lots of orders coming in and all the chicken cooked fresh to order, you're usually looking at a minimum wait of half an hour before getting your food.

We looked through the menu online and called up in advance to make sure we didn't have too much of a wait.

Heading inside, the takeaway has been smartly fitted out with colourful tiles and a couple of tables set up for anyone wanting to sit in.

As far as takeaways go, it's a pretty welcoming set up and you can see straight into the kitchen where all the food is being cooked.

The staff are incredibly friendly, and despite being rushed off their feet with so many orders, they'll happily take the time to explain what's in some of the more unfamiliar Egyptian dishes.

Going off what looked popular with other customers, we ordered 10 chicken thighs with medium spice (the chicken on the menu works a bit like Nandos) and a shawarma burger as our main meals.

While the chicken feels like the main event, there are also plenty of vegetarian options with amazing falafel and tempting salads all on the menu.

For £7.99, the chicken thighs also came with a side of Peri-salted chips and were a seriously generous portion for one person to get stuck into.

The burger, which was £8.98 for a meal with chips and a drink, was made up of two burger patties piled high with chicken shawarma meat and cheese.

We also decided to try some of the signature sides, with a fresh hummus, grilled halloumi and an Egyptian speciality - kushari.

If you've never eaten Egyptian food before, kushari is definitely the one dish you need to try - it's a mix of rice, macaroni and lentils, all topped with a spicy tomato sauce, crispy fried onions and chickpeas.

Unlike anything we've ever tried from a take-away before, we can see why a steady stream of Egyptian customers were travelling from all over the city to get a taste of home.

With an entire order coming in at just over £25, it's a pretty reasonable take-away tea for the quality of the meal you're getting.

The chicken was grilled to perfection, covered in sauce and went perfectly with the generous portions of sides, while the hummus was some of the best we've ever tried.

The only thing missing from our order was the warmed flat breads that were meant to come with the hummus, which knocked a star off the rating.

We had so much food we barely noticed - but it would have been nicer to have something to dip instead of our chips.

For a first experience of Egyptian food we certainly weren't disappointed and it's easy to see why this new take-away has built up such a loyal following.
