We tried 'stunning' new Edinburgh cocktail bar housed at former public toilets

Recently we told you how former public toilets in the city centre had been transformed into a swish new cocktail bar, with Herringbone taking over the site at Abbeyhill at 3 Royal Terrace Gardens.

Already having two other locations close by, one in North Berwick, East Lothian, and their other venue at Goldenacre which is located just off Ferry Road on South Trinity Street, Edinburgh Live was excited to head along to see what they'd done with the place.

Knowing the reputation of the other two sites, we were looking forward to testing out the geographically inspired cocktails, their enticing menu of food and to marvel at the newly transformed modern interior.

Boasting a drinks menu filled with local craft beers, 30 wines by the glass, speciality spirits and beautifully crafted cocktails developed by an in-house mixologist, individual diners and families will also be able to sample a large range of dishes from a crafted food menu, which draws on inspiration from the plentiful larder of East Lothian and across Scotland.

These include some of the Herringbone favourites such as Seared Steak Slices served with rocket and parmesan, and the flavoursome Sesame-Crusted Bass Rock Salmon Burger. As well as some brand-new dishes created by our talented chef team.

It’s safe to say there is something to suit all tastes and please even the most discerning of diners.

On arrival and entrance to the restaurant, we couldn't not be amazed at the lovely interior of the restaurant due to its coastal style which gave it a beach-themed experience along with an upbeat but relaxing feel.

The venue was definitely now a million miles away from its former role, we sat down and as the team at the Herringbone are well-known for their fast service and incredible mixed drinks, that was the first thing that was ordered to our table.

Two cocktails were ordered which were the 'North Berwick Sea Dog' which has NB Gin, grapefruit, lemon, thyme and black pepper which gave it a lovely but not too over powerful kick. This cost £8.95 and was worth every penny as it left a lovely citrus flavour in the mouth.

Alongside this, a 'Peach Out Negroni' was ordered which consisted Tanqueray gin, Rinquinquin vermouth and Campari. This was a little different from the Sea Dog and is definitely a lot lighter and also less strong in alcohol which will may be preferred by some drinkers.

After a long look at the menu, it was time to decide what we would eat for our main and we chose the daily gourmet burger which was served with fries.

The burger was served with a lovely hot brioche bun and contained a well-done burger, lettuce, cheese and tomato. And you could really taste the difference when you had some of the lovely homemade burger sauce provided with the burger which definitely complimented it.

Finally, it was time for dessert. We went for the obvious option of the sticky toffee pudding.

It was served with a extraordinary toffee sauce and a creamy vanilla ice cream and a light dusting of icing on top.

There were many other dishes on the menu that we would have loved to try and definitely will be back to savour some of the seafood alongside some of the other unique cocktails we missed out on this time around.

Having only opened over a month ago, it's clear to see the Herringbone is already making a big impression with a promising start meaning it looks like it will be serving families and couples well into the future.
