We tried pizza counters at Asda, Sainsbury's and Morrisons and one was just like a real takeaway

With the cost of living rising, families are unlikely to have much cash to splash around on takeaways.

But when you still want a night off cooking, supermarket pizzas offer another, much cheaper, option.

That's why we've been comparing the pizza counters at Morrisons, Sainsbury's and Asda to see which one comes out on top.

We bought a medium (10 inch) and two large (14 inch) pizzas from each retailer and judged them on price and taste - and there was one clear winner.

All three have the option to choose either thin and crispy or deep pan, but there are extra choices at Morrisons, where you can opt for sourdough or gluten free, and Asda, where you can get woodfired, stuffed crust or Detroit - you pay extra for those though.

And they all offer a choice of either tomato or BBQ sauce, with Asda and Morrisons offering garlic as a third choice.

When it comes to those all-important toppings, they all have a decent range to choose from, but Asda has the most at 19, Morrisons 18 and Sainsbury's 12.

But while you can choose any four toppings within the standard price at the first two, at Sainsbury's you can only pick three.

It didn't affect us, as for our comparison we went for a large cheese and tomato, a large pepperoni and for the medium, we were actually taking off the cheese (for one fussy eater) - while adding either chicken or meatballs (Asda being the only place to offer these) or chicken and ham.

Unfortunately at Sainsbury's we couldn't get them made up at all, as the counter doesn't open until noon and there was no way the man working behind the counter was going to make an exception.

In true Blue Peter fashion they had some pre-prepared ones already on display so we opted for those instead.

Price wise for all three pizzas, Morrisons came out on top at £10.67, followed by Asda at £11.60 and Sainsbury's at £12.

Popularity wise however, the order was reversed, with Morrisons a clear winner among the four of us, even Miss Fussy.

While the base was slightly thicker than you'd expect with a thin crust, it cooked perfectly and the sauce, cheese and overall taste made it the closest to a real deal takeaway you'd get delivered to your door.

If you do fancy trying one for yourselves, there are some deals running at the moment too.

Morrisons has two 10 inch pizzas and a litre bottle of Diet Coke or Coke Zero for £4.99.

Asda's Bigger Movie Nights Meal Deal offers the same for £6, but you also get either a Vue cinema ticket or a Sky Store movie voucher included.
