We tried McVities, Sainsbury's, Aldi and Jack's milk chocolate digestives and we were divided over second place

You can't go wrong with a digestive with your tea.

It's a classic that was first developed by doctors in the 1800s to aid digestion and then manufactured by McVities in 1892. But it wasn't until 1925 that they decided to improve on the original recipe by adding chocolate.

After nearly 100 years of delicious milk chocolate on our digestives, many other brands have created rivals at cheaper prices, but are they up to the taste test? We tried three other brands to see if they can compete against McVities.

The products

McVities (266g) priced at £1.75

Aldi (300g) priced at 59p

Jack's (200g) priced at £1.15

Sainsbury's (300g) priced at 85p

What Jack thought:

He said: "Before trying the digestives, I’d expected the official McVitie’s brand to be the best, as it’s a higher price and is a classic household staple. I had tried the Jack’s biscuit before, so I knew that would be good already. I don’t think I’d tried the Sainsbury’s or Aldi ones before.

"The best biscuits for dunking were Jack’s and McVitie’s. The Jack’s and Sainsbury’s biscuits have a strange aftertaste, but are still moreish. McVitie’s is hands down the best for dunking, but Sainsbury’s is still a good contender for this.

"Overall, I’d rank them as follows; McVities in first place, Jack's second, Aldi third and Sainsbury's coming in fourth, which I wasn't very impressed with. I’d still scran them all in one sitting though, and definitely champion Aldi and Jack’s ones as cost-effective and equally delicious alternatives."

What Milly thought:

She said: "After tasting Aldi, Sainsbury's, Jacks and McVities milk chocolate digestive biscuits, I believe McVities continue to be undefeated. The chocolate and biscuit combination was to die for.

"The chocolate was lovely and the biscuit did not go soggy when put to the tea test. If I was looking for an alternative I would definitely go for the Sainsbury's chocolate digestives.

"The chocolate was as rich as the McVities and the biscuit was delicious. I would rate this biscuit a 7/8 out of 10. My least favourite was Jack’s chocolate digestive biscuit we got from a corner shop.

"I did not like the aftertaste of the biscuit and the chocolate was not as rich as I thought it was going to be. As well as this, I was slightly disappointed in Aldi’s chocolate digestives.

"Although the chocolate was nice I felt the biscuit was stale. However, when put to the tea test it did not crumble and the chocolate melted perfectly. Overall, Mcvities still remain the tastiest chocolate digestive biscuits with Sainburys as a close alternative."

The verdict:

In our taste test, McVities reign supreme, but we were divided about second place with a battle between Jack's and Sainsbury's. But when you throw cost into the mix, Aldi wins coming in over £1.14 cheaper than the original, if you are looking for a perfect partner for your brew, they could certainly be an option that is kinder to your bank balance as McVities appeared really expensive in comparison.

And let's face it, whichever one you chose, you are unlikely to go wrong with a chocolate digestive.
