The best-rated fish and chip shop in Leeds can be found in an area steeped in the history of our national dish.
Murgatroyds opened in Yeadon in 1994, a few minutes drive from the original Harry Ramsdens restaurant in neighbouring Guiseley.

Leeds Live headed down one lunchtime to see what all the fuss is about.
As it turns out, that was quite a popular plan this Friday. The queue for a table was almost out of the door but after around 10 minutes I was at the front and soon seated near a window on the periphery of the hustle and bustle.
That being said, most of the tables in Murgatroyds are fairly private booths so it is only when making your way to your table that you get a grasp of just how packed this popular eatery is.
I went for the classic haddock fillet, which came with chips and bread and butter as standard.
I added mushy peas and scraps as extras and a pot of tea to wash it down.
When my meal arrived about 10 minutes later the first thing I noticed was the humongous bowl of scraps placed down by the waitress.
The bowl itself was a decent cereal bowl size and the scraps were piled high so the top ones threatened to tumble down the sides of the crispy mound.
I was also impressed with the size of the haddock, particularly considering there were large and extra-large options I chose not to order. The flavourful fillet flaked apart beautifully, unlike the sopping greasy fillets you can sometimes find at other chippies.
The fish was encased in a lovely light and crispy batter that clung to it delicately.
The chips were full chunks of potato with crispy golden edges and a few tiny ones that were packed with extra deep-fried tastiness.
