We tried Edinburgh Chopstix Too Good To Go bag and were left disappointed

As food costs soar many locals have been looking for new ways to save money and grab a bargain and there are some great options out there.

This week we have been on a mission to try all the places that the Edinburgh Too Good To Go app has on offer and on Thursday, November 17 we managed to get one for Chopsticks - the Chinese-style restaurant in Waverley Mall.

The 'Too Good To Go' app was launched in the UK all the way back in 2016 but as the cost of living crisis worsens has become more popular as people look for ways to save money.

The idea behind the app is that cafés, shops and restaurants all put together any leftover food in a bag or two - depending on how much is left - and sell it at a cheaper price.

A magic bag at Chopstix costs £5 for £15 worth of food and is a meal for two. They usually sell out fast, so we monitored the app to secure one.

The description of the mystery bag reads: "Nourishing Noodles, Tasty Toppings and Sizzling Sides. What surprise will be in your Chopstix Magic Bag!"

We arrived just after 18.45 to collect our dinner and the food was dished into bright red boxes in front of us, before being packed into a bag. When we got home we were excited to unpack the budget takeaway to see exactly what we got.

The magic bag contained three boxes, one with five spring rolls and two with some thick noodles and a portion of salt and chilli chicken with some sauce.

Tucking in we were not overly impressed, the noodles were bland and had an overcooked texture and the chicken was just okay it wasn't seasoned that well but the sauce tasted good.

The spring rolls were also tasteless and had barely any filling We found the ones we cook at home from frozen actually taste better, while the noodles reminded me of the ones you used to get in a hot school dinner at primary school - not a memory I wanted to relive.

If you were heading home and getting the train then it might be a cheap option for a quick and hot dinner but in my opinion, there are better options available.

For £5 I wouldn't say it was amazing value you got two portions of chicken with noodles and a couple of spring rolls each but the food wasn't that tasty and we didn't finish all of it.

The idea behind it is great and looking at the app they had pretty good ratings with other customers praising the portion size but for £5 I would have preferred to just get two happy meals from McDonald's and would have enjoyed it more.

From all the restaurants we have tried so far it didn't compare but we might have just bought one on a bad day as others have shared positive experiences before.

The app reduces waste and gives nifty shoppers the chance to bag a bargain. A number of independent businesses and well-known franchises take part across Edinburgh including Starbucks, Costa, Bar Burrito and Shinsen Sushi.

If you've not come across it before, you pay in advance - it normally costs one-third of the original price of the items - and collect your 'magic' bag at a certain time, with the exact contents being a surprise until you pick it up.

If you have found a gem on Too Good To Go - Let us know in the comments. You can also find out more about the app here.
