We tried chocolate Santas from supermarkets Aldi, Morrisons, Lidl, Iceland and Lindt to find out which is best

When it comes to stocking fillers, there are a few annual staples.

For me, a Terry's Chocolate Orange is an absolute must, while other people swear by Lindt's luxurious chocolate Santa.

While Terry's seem to have a monopoly on chocolate oranges, most supermarkets have cheaper competitors to Lindt's much-loved Christmassy treat.

Recently, our sister website Birminingham Live compared two of the cheapest Santas on the market - from Lidl and Aldi.

We went a step further and got five to try - including a Lindt one - to determine which chocolate Santa really is the best.

They ranged in price for 89p ( Aldi and Lidl ) to £2.50 (Lindt), with Morrisons (£1.25) and Iceland (£1) falling somewhere in between.

The Santas also came in different sizes, with the most expensive surprisingly being the smallest, while the two cheapest were the largest.

Each also had their own unique design, with a different style of Father Christmas.

Here are my thoughts on each:

Aldi

Aldi's chocolate Santa (Manchester Evening News)

The joint largest and the first one I acquired was Aldi's 'Dairyfine' offering.

Santa himself looked very friendly with blue eyes and a big smile and the chocolate itself felt nice and solid.

I was quite pleasantly surprised with the flavour, it was the cheapest so nothing to write home about but it reminded me of Advent calendar chocolate and who doesn't love an Advent calendar?

At 89p, it's very hard to complain.

Lidl

At the exact same price and size was Lidl's 'Favorina' Santa.

As Birmingham Live noted, the foil depicts an older Santa with more pronounced eye wrinkles and a bushier beard., his eye wrinkles more pronounced and his beard a little bushier.

Underneath the foil is exactly the same mould as the Aldi Santa but the flavour seems slightly different.

There is almost a hint of hazelnut creeping through and again it is quite pleasant - especially for 89p.

Iceland

Iceland's chocolate Santa (Manchester Evening News)

This Santa looked the cheapest even if it wasn't and was a different shade of red from the others.

It was also the second smallest but how did it actually taste?

To be honest, not fantastic.

Although more expensive than Aldi and Lidl's, it just tasted really cheap and would make for a disappointing Christmas morning in the Molloy household.

Morrisons

Morrisons' chocolate Santa (Manchester Evening News)

Now we're talking.

The second most expensive Santa of the lot and there's a marked improvement in taste.

It's a lot creamier and just tastes like better quality chocolate has been used than with the cheaper options.

The Santa's design is less cartoonish than the others and the one I ended up with did appear to have a broken leg or two - which may upset the children.

Lindt

A fraction the size of the others and double the price of the next most expensive (Morrisons) but does the quality make up for it?

There is no denying that its presentation is the best with a gold ribbon and bell complementing the regular Santa outfit.

The quality of the chocolate stands out as well - it tastes luxurious and indulgent.

For me though, it is a bit too sweet and is actually a tad sickly, so Morrisons just about takes the crown.

Have you tried any chocolate Santas this year and if so, which is your favourite? Let us know in the comments below.
