A new bridge crossing over the M8 motorway will soon be open to the public and will reconnect Sighthill to the city centre of Glasgow.
The Cor-Ten Steel bridge which has been named the 'Sighthill bridge' by school children in the area is part of a £250 million redevelopment of Sighthill which also includes over 800 new homes.
The regeneration of the area, including the bridge which is key to the Glasgow City Region Deal has excited many Glasgow residents who travel through the area.
It has been observed by many Glaswegians that the North of Glasgow is cut off, Council Leader, Susan Aitken, SNP, even said: “We are standing over this multi-lane motorway which for generations has literally divided the north of the city from the rest."
At Glasgow Live we decided to travel to Sighthill and speak to some of the people who will be positively impacted by the new development.
Student, George Eldo, 25, lives in the North of Glasgow and said: “I study mechanical engineering at Glasgow Caledonian and the bridge is going to be great for me heading to university.
“Now I do not need to make a detour round to the other bridge over the motorway.”
Luxmikant Singh, 36 who works in financial services, said: “I normally walk to my office it will reduce some distance which is nice.
“I think it will be convenient for everyone, will reduce the time and this area will become a nice spot for families in general to spend some time.”
Janice, 66, lived in the area for many years before the development started, she proclaimed: “I think it will be fantastic, it’s absolutely what we’ve been asking for years in this area.
“I used to use the old bridge that was there and the new one will be a quick one into town and I think it will be good for people.”
Michael, 32, manager of a bakery has children and regularly walks them through the area, he said: “The bridge will make a big impact for me and my kids as it will reduce the time between where we stay and their schools, shops in the city centre and visiting their grandparents.”
The bridge connecting Sighthill and other areas in the North of Glasgow to the city centre will be opening very soon.
Councillor Susan Aitken, Leader of Glasgow City Council and Chair of the Glasgow City Region City Deal, said: "The ongoing regeneration of Sighthill is one of the biggest projects of its kind on these islands - and the completion of this remarkable bridge is a real landmark in that journey.
“It signals the reconnection of Sighthill with not only the city centre but also neighbouring communities in North Glasgow.
“The design, landscaping and approaches of this bridge make it an unique structure in Glasgow, and a symbol of the transformation of this part of the city. It will open very shortly, and I’m sure will be very attractive to local people and visitors."
