'We tested McDonald’s Mighty McMuffin against the original - one was miles better’

The McDonald's Breakfast is a must when on early morning commutes or after a late night out, filled with fan favourites like the hash browns or bacon and cheese flatbread. For most hungry diners, the McMuffin is the go-to menu item whether you get it with sausage or sans-egg.

McDonald's knows how much we love the McMuffin so as a late addition to their festive menu, the fast food chain has released the Mighty McMuffin.

We know starting your day with a disappointing breakfast can ruin your entire day so we put the Mighty McMuffin to the test against the original three to see if there was a clear winner.

The Egg and Cheese McMuffin is, to me, the pesto pasta of the McMuffin range - it's nice to eat and fills a gap but is there anything really special about it?

This McMuffin is the base level McMuffin, it's perfectly serviceable and taste good with the classic McDonald's melted cheese complimenting the perfectly circular egg. If this is your go to McMuffin you're probably either a vegetarian or a little bit boring - and that's totally ok.

Bacon and Egg McMuffin - 7/10

Bacon from McDonald's can be hit and miss as it cools down very quickly, however getting a good Bacon and Egg McMuffin is an undeniably good start to the day.

The bacon is light but still fills you up for the day and the egg and cheese slice adds that extra pizzazz missing from the bacon breakfast roll. It loses points for the inconsistency with the bacon quality but still is a solid choice on those early morning trips.

Sausage and Egg McMuffin - 8/10

In my opinion, the Sausage and Egg McMuffin is the best McMuffin on the year round menu. It is consistently good and feels like a proper breakfast burger.

The sausage is filling but not overpowering while the egg brings some lightness to the muffin - truly the winner if you're looking for a year round favourite.

The Mighty McMuffin - 9/10

£4.69

Now for the main event - the Mighty McMuffin.

This is a classic McMuffin toasted English muffin with sausage, egg, bacon and cheese topped with your choice of brown sauce or ketchup. For McDonald's Breakfast Roll fans this is essentially the same but in a delicious McMuffin.

Although this is a rather expensive £4.69, I would say it's just about worth it especially on those indecisive days where the choice between sausage and bacon is too hard.

Being able to choose between ketchup and brown sauce is also such a simple thing but totally changes your experience of the food. Also just having a sauce stops the McMuffin from being too dry, making the sheer amount of food much easier to get through.

This was very filling, bordering on stodgy, so runs the risk of being too much if you like to order a side of hashbrowns or flatbread. It also risks the bacon problem but because of all the other elements this doesn't hinder it as much as the Bacon and Egg version.

Overall the Mighty McMuffin has the other McMuffins beat when it comes to flavour but is let down in price - it is almost £5 for one breakfast item. I'm not sure at that price it would be a daily pick but for a special occasion Maccies breakfast I'd definitely buy it again.

Breakfast runs until 11am every day so even late brunchers can get their hands on this special edition delicacy, which is only available while the festive menu is on.

The Mighty McMuffin is out now and can be purchased in store, through the McDonald's app or ordered through food delivery apps like Uber Eats.
