We taste test Glasgow's Mortons Roll vs supermarket alternative to find out if it lives up to hype

Ah, the morning roll, a staple in any Glaswegian's weekend breakfast. So much so, that when it was revealed our famous Mortons crispy roll might disappear from our shelves there was quite rightly outrage.

Thankfully, the iconic Drumchapel bakery has been saved and with it, the future for these morning rolls. So, to celebrate them reappearing on our shelves after a two-week hiatus, Glasgow Live has decided to pit them against a supermarket Scottish morning roll.

Heading along to our local shop, we secured two Morton's Rolls before hitting the supermarket to try to find their version of the Scottish morning roll.

Having secured the goods, as well as four of the finest square sausages and a can of diet Irn-Bru to wash them down with, it was time to compare.

Appearance

Both rolls and sausage looked appealing right off the bat (SM)

Both rolls looked appetising with the square sausage, with the supermarket roll being slightly smaller and plumper and the Morton's more compact.

Winner: We'll give this one as a draw as both looked very appealing.

The buttering

The buttering stage (SM)

Always a good test and our robust buttering technique really put both to the test. The Mortons could take it though the supermarket roll not so much. Even better, we love taking our Morton's tax – a wee pinch of the fluffy insides of the roll before buttering.

Winner: Mortons Roll

Taste

The taste test begins (SM)

While the supermarket roll was perfectly fine but it felt almost functionary, it was just sort of there to serve as something to hold the sausage. The Mortons though enhanced the whole experience from the first crunch of the crispy exterior to taste of the delightfully fluffy interior soaked in butter and grease. Mouthwatering.

Winner: Mortons Roll

Sauce retention

The softer and fluffier supermarket roll just did not do as well in this test, the Mortons soaked up that red sauce like a sponge while the supermarket roll spilt out all over the sides.

Winner: Mortons Roll

Summary

The Morton's Roll was just too good (SM)

It might be the Glaswegian in us but the Mortons Roll was just different class, while the breakfast roll was perfectly adequate, the crispiness of the outside of the Mortons Roll coupled with the fluffy with insides and the additional flavour just enhanced the experience.

The winner and a thing of beauty (SM)

Winner: Mortons Roll
