We spent £20 at Glasgow's Christmas Fair and this is what we could afford

With the festive season upon us, the Christmas light switch on now a distant memory and December finally here, there is a wee glow about the city. From St Enoch Square, with its mini-Christmas market, to George Square and its festive fair, there is plenty to see and do to get you in the Yuletide mood.

As always though, these things cost money and the festive fun doesn't always come cheap, so Glasgow Live set out, £20 in hand, to find out just how far our score would get us at the George Square Christmas Fair.

Though many will be doubtful it would get you much in the current climate, the results will probably be surprising to some.

We headed along with £20 to see what we could get (KM)

This year's event is a dazzling array of funfair rides, food stalls, games, ice rink and of course the awe-inspiring 33-metre-high observation wheel.

But where to start? And what to buy?

As part of the challenge, we decided we wanted a wee stocking filler to take home, a shot on one of the exciting experiences on offer, food, drink and of course one of the cracking festive treats on offer.

So, with that in mind, we headed in, wandering around to get a feel for what was on offer, with the ice rink and Big Wheel obvious draws but a £15.50 a session for the ice skating and £8 a ticket for the wheel, it felt like too much of a dent on our limited budget.

So instead, we opted for the Venetian flying chairs – chain-linked swings that spin you into the air about the square – which at £4 a go, is actually a pretty good deal.

Off to a flyer – excuse the pun – we then went on the hunt for a refuel.

Plenty of options on this front, from the German Grill and the enticing Curry sausage (£8 though) to Efe's delightful looking donner wraps (£9) we had lots to choose from, but we opted for that old Glasgow staple - Salt and Chilli chips, that came in at a relatively fair £6.

Not only did it help with the budget but these were pretty tasty and definitely filled a hole, though as we were thirsty too we had to add a can of juice which was another £2.50, leaving us with £7.50 to get our memento and one of the delightful sweet treats on offer.

Our festive glass Christmas ornament that cost £6 (KM)

First up, was our stocking filler, sadly there were only two or three actual gift stalls, though one had plenty of handmade festive ornaments and though we wanted a little snow globe, we had to settle for a little pretty glass Christmas Tree, that we managed to get for an ok £6, as the globe was £10.

Finally, that left us with the sweet treat, and with £1.50 to spend our options were limited, our first query - the marshmallow stand, with two large mallows to toast on an open fire, was just too much.

The little Chocolate Kiss. (SM)

But we lucked out when we found the chocolate kisses stand where we managed to get a strawberry chocolate kiss for the golden price of £1.50, a delicious end to our adventure.

All in all, the £20 note went pretty far, with a fun memento, the Christmas tree ornament for £6, a shot on the Venetian Swings (£4), a tasty Salt and Chilli chips and a drink for £8.50 and a sweet chocolate treat for £1.50.
