'We're much better' - Tottenham chief makes bold Liverpool and Man City claim

Fabio Paratici is confident Tottenham have been able to reduce the gap to Liverpool and Manchester City and is targeting regular Champions League football.

The Spurs managing director took the reins in North London last summer and has been able to reunite with Antonio Conte - the two worked together at Juventus - to get Champions League football at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The Italian pair were heavily involved in a busy summer of transfer business in which the likes of Ivan Perisic, Richarlison and Yves Bissouma all signed.

Those signings and Conte’s relentless pushing of the boundaries has helped Tottenham enjoy an unbeaten start to the new campaign, with 14 points from six games leaving them third and, in the eyes of some, early dark horses for a title challenge. But while Paratici admits that the gap between them and the two favourites - Liverpool and City - remains, the 50-year-old claimed it has been reduced.

“One year ago I came here and if you remember my first words were we have to be better, build something important and arrive to be competitive,” Paratici told Tottenham’s website . “I think we’re in a good place, the gap has reduced. We finished in the table 20 points less than Liverpool and Manchester City so this gap is not possible to reduce in a small time but we’re much better.

“Antonio is one of the best coaches in the world, we signed players, we improved players but we have a long way in front of us. We start to be more competitive but it’s not enough. We want to be better. We want to be better as a club, person and professionals but I think this club is now going in the right direction.

“For the other clubs in England, it’s something special to get in the top four and for us has to be a continued target. I don’t want to say normal target but it has to become a habit to play Champions League.”
