We're investigating Scotland's energy scandal as the McCrone Report turns 51

IT'S 51 years since the McCrone Report detailed Scotland's incredible oil wealth – yet Scotland has some of the highest energy bills in Europe.

What's going on?

How can it be possible that a country with plenty of energy resources – be that oil, gas, wind, hydro or other renewables – is paying astronomical prices for it, with a third of homes in fuel poverty?

It doesn't make sense.

That's why we're running our investigation into the Scottish energy scandal from February 24-28.

Over the week, we'll be digging into how this energy-rich Scotland got ripped off – largely due to our membership of the Union.

We'll be looking in depth at:

  • How our European neighbours have been able to keep energy bills low in recent years
  • The state of play with renewables – how do we make the most of them when the right and vested interests are desperate to stop their success?
  • The individuals and groups trying to make renewable profits benefit Scottish communities
  • Alternative kinds of power and the Scottish companies making a difference
  • The reality of nuclear power
  • and much more

Thursday, February 27 will see the McCrone Report – the document that revealed just how rich the North Sea could make Scotland ... that was hushed up by Westminster for decades – published in full. It will be part of a special edition, packed with key analysis on what the document means 51 years after it was first written.

And last but not least on Friday, February 28, we're taking the microscope to GB Energy.

Labour claim that their new creation will reduce bills by hundreds of pounds, and transform Scotland's north east.

We'll be examining:

  • GB Energy: Promises vs reality (in numbers)
  • The broken promises of the 2024 election campaign
  • Exactly what progress has (or hasn't) been made on GB Energy so far
  • What's really going on with their Aberdeen "HQ"
  • and much more

There is a direct line from Professor Gavin McCrone's suppressed 1974 document to Labour's false promises today.

In that time, Westminster has always used Scotland's energy resources to its advantage – while providing the bare minimum for Scotland in return.

This important series aims not to dwell on the past, but to properly understand the state of energy in Scotland.
