'We're deluded' Leeds United supporters give up on Cody Gakpo chase after World Cup showing

Leeds United supporters have lost faith in their club signing PSV sensation Cody Gakpo. Reports over the summer had linked the Dutchman with a move to Elland Road.

An exceptional season in the Eredivisie saw Gakpo emerge as a potential Raphinha replacement. However, a move did not materialise and the Whites signed Feyenoord winger Luis Sinisterra instead, a deal that's worked out well so far.

Nine goals and 12 assists in 14 league games have continued Gakpo’s form, causing clubs like Manchester United to also enter the race. Two more strikes at the World Cup for the Netherlands has only added to the ever-growing hype.

Performing on the biggest stage of all has a tendency to place players in the shop window and cause their value to skyrocket. Gakpo - who once revealed interest from Leeds and Southampton - looks set to emerge as one of the standout stars of the tournament.

One pessimistic Whites fan blasted supporters as “deluded” if they believe the forward will join in January. An online comment read: “If we still think we’re signing Gakpo in January then we’re more deluded than I ever thought.”

Another criticised the Elland Road hierarchy for failing to act in the summer, insisting “it will take years” before Leeds can attract players of his ilk. While Leeds, finishing ninth with Bielsa at the helm, seemed like an exciting prospect. It’ll be years until we can be appealing to players again, if ever.”

One Leeds fans wrote: "It's better this way. Can't be wasting time chasing after ridiculous targets who'll never come. Now we just need CDK to temporarily retire or something."
