‘We played the better rugby' – Scotland’s Blair Kinghorn calls for killer instinct

Blair Kinghorn has urged Scotland to be more ruthless after reflecting on the missed opportunities that cost them victory against England in a heartbreaking 16-15 defeat at Twickenham.

Gregor Townsend’s side played some of their best attacking rugby of the Six Nations so far but failed to capitalise on key moments, allowing England to snatch a narrow win and end Scotland’s four-year grip on the Calcutta Cup.

Reflecting on the Six Nations Championship so far, Kinghorn said: “I think we are really disappointed. I think having watched it [the England game] back a few times now, there were loads of opportunities for us to go out there and win the game.

“I think we played the better rugby. We certainly put our attacking brand onto the field but we just weren’t able to capitalise and it cost us in the end.”

(Image: PA) Kinghorn, who plays his club rugby for Toulouse, returned to France during the period between international matches.

He helped Toulouse defeat Vannes 63-21 in the Top 14 on Saturday, and now he’s pleased to be back with his Scotland teammates as they prepare for a crunch home clash with Wales this weekend.

“It’s good to come back and see the boys after a week back in France,” said Kinghorn, who has started all three of Scotland's matches so far.

“I know some of the boys stayed here and had a good week of training. So, I’ve just tried to get stuck back into it for our last game at Scottish Gas Murrayfield.

“I think going back, the style of rugby is a little different but I think I’m comfortably doing it. We had a really good win at the weekend, so it’s good to get some more minutes under the belt.

“I think continuity is always good in playing games. It feels good getting ready to get stuck back in.”

Asked what he’s expecting from a Wales side who sit bottom of the Six Nations standings, Kinghorn insisted that Scotland won’t be taking them lightly - especially after a battling showing against Ireland a fortnight ago.

“They’ve obviously been through a fairly tough time recently,” he acknowledged.

“But their game against Ireland last weekend shows just how much of an improved team they are.

“So, it’s going to be a really tough test match for us. We know that, we are not taking anything lightly. We are preparing as well as we can and it should be a really good game in front of our fans.”
