'We'll stay for a party': Scotland fans stuck in Greece amid Heathrow closure

MEMBERS of the Tartan Army celebrating Scotland’s 1-0 win over Greece in Athens are stuck due Heathrow Airport's closure following a fire at an electrical substation.

Scots who attended the game on Thursday evening and planned to travel home via Heathrow on Friday are facing disruption.

More than 1300 flights to and from Heathrow Airport have been disrupted because of the closure.

Aberdeen and Glasgow airports said all flights to and from Heathrow have been cancelled for the remainder of Friday.

Edinburgh Airport has advised any British Airways passengers not to travel to the airport following the disruption at Heathrow.

Gavin Keith and Edith Stewart, from Aberdeen, told BBC News they found out about the disruption on Friday morning.

The pair were part of a group booking back to Aberdeen via Heathrow on a British Airways service.

They have been told they are booked on a 5pm flight to Heathrow, but are unsure if it will go ahead.

Stewart said: "If we can't get out of here tonight, we'll stay for a party.

"It's the chance you take when you are travelling. I would prefer to get home tonight or tomorrow because I have commitments at home.

"We know Heathrow is shut all day, the airlines are giving us the next available flight, but it's just a case of waiting."

British Airways advised customers not to travel to Heathrow on Friday “until further notice” as it had cancelled all short-haul flights serving the airport.

It said in a statement: “This will clearly have a significant impact on our operation and our customers and we’re working as quickly as possible to update them on their travel options for the next 24 hours and beyond.”

Passengers booked to fly to or from Heathrow with British Airways on Saturday or Sunday are being given the option to rebook to a later date for free.

The airline said it has “provided ground transport options where possible” for passengers on flights diverted to other UK airports.
