The standout cellphone from the 90s seems to be back as a wave of tech companies re-launch flip phones this 2023, including Nokia who have brought back their iconic 2660 flip phone.
The Nokia 2660 Flip was first launched back in 2007 as an upgrade from 'brick phones' and was a top contender when it came to tech, much-loved for its flip-out design at the time. Fast forward 16 years, and a host of smartphones later, Nokia has re-launched.
Priced at £64.99 the affordable handset is aimed at tech users looking to switch off from often constant social media pings, and instead only have access to calls, texts and a basic search engine.
In terms of performance, there's not a lot to say the handset is simply only made for making calls and sending texts and comes with 48MB of RAM, 128 MB of storage and a dual SIM.
The model also has a single back camera with LED flash, with no fancy features like zoom, slow-mo or 4K videoing, but it could take a basic snap if needed. It's fitted with a traditional 'old-style' jack for headphones and has Bluetooth, so users with up-to-date AirPods or Pixel Buds could still listen to music.
Having previously only been available to buy in Black, Blue and Red, the newest additions of this old model now come in Lush Green and Pop Pink. Tech shoppers can also choose to upgrade to the Nokia 2660 Flip and Charging Cradle, which is on offer from £84.89 down to £64.99.
Whilst Nokia's affordable flip phone will cater to those looking for the basics, a handful of tech companies including Samsung, Oppo and Google have launched smart flip phones. Fitted with all the high-end specs of a smartphone but resemble that of a 90's flip, but compared to Noki'as 2660 they average at around £800 more.
Gone are the days of flip phones being reasonably priced, the majority of flip handsets are still over the £500 mark. This is likely down to the wave of new features, from upgraded cameras, faster processors, touch screen features, video call capabilities and higher screen resolutions (we've moved on from the pixelated snake game).
Google has made recent headlines for launching its first spin of a foldable handset, the Pixel Fold, but at £1,749 it's currently the most expensive on the market. It also rivals that of Samsung's 2022 Galaxy Z Fold 4.
These are the newest flip smartphones we'd recommend taking a look at if you're looking for a touch of 90's design but fitted with an up-to-date camera, battery, processing, video and smart features.
