‘We controlled the game’ - Wolves boss Bruno Lage verdict on Newcastle United defeat

Wolves manager Bruno Lage believes his side were unlucky to lose against Newcastle United last night. After a dominant first half from Eddie Howe’s men, the game balanced out but the visitors still only managed two shots on target in 90 minutes.

Newcastle, on the other hand, had more than twice as many shots as their opponents and Chris Wood’s 72nd-minute spot-kick proved the difference between the two sides. Defeat for Wolves puts a dent in their European ambitions as a win would have lifted them above Manchester United and West Ham into sixth.

Lage thought his side ‘controlled’ the game but credited the Magpies for their win. “I think, especially from our side, it was a game with two distinct halves,” he said. “First-half we controlled the game, without and with the ball, we know how dangerous Newcastle can be with the runs in behind, and men in front. They want to push us with defenders and Shelvey, to try to find the run in behind.”

“We controlled that, but after with the ball I think we controlled the game but didn’t create, we weren’t aggressive, we didn’t create our chances, but we were there with the ball. Second-half it was different. We were the better side, we started very well, we tried to find the spaces, the zones to be nearer the box.

“But at this moment, I should give credit to Newcastle because there weren’t too many chances but the (one) chance they had they scored so they deserved to win the game.”
