We compared supermarket petrol prices at Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda and Morrisons

Petrol and diesel prices are starting to drop across the UK - but the big supermarkets have been accused of charging over the odds.

The average price of unleaded now sits at 155.82p per litre, while diesel is 179.18p per litre.

It used to be the case that supermarkets would normally be the cheapest place to get your fuel, with motorway stations the most expensive.

But motoring organisation the RAC said the major grocers are “taking advantage” of drivers by not lowering their prices - despite a recent dip in wholesale costs.

In a warning last month, the RAC said some independent forecourts now have better prices.

Following the criticism, supermarket chain Asda became the first to cut fuel prices across its UK forecourts.

The RAC said unleaded prices at Asda have been reduced by around 4.5p per litre on average, and by 5.5p per litre for diesel.

The only way to make sure you're getting the best price for fuel is to compare prices using an app like Petrol Prices.

This lets you search for the cheapest petrol or diesel within a 20-mile radius of your location - and you can tailor your search for a certain brand.

This includes the supermarkets and more well-known petrol forecourts, like BP, Esso and Jet.

To help you see how supermarket fuel prices vary across the country, we've compared Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury's and Tesco forecourts at ten postcodes across England, Scotland and Wales.

The postcodes we looked at ranged as far down as Brighton and Cornwall, and as high up as Edinburgh and Glasgow.

These are not the absolute cheapest prices where you live, but just how much the supermarkets are charging.

It is still worth doing your own search to see how much smaller chains and independent forecourts cost.

Of all the postcodes we checked, the cheapest price for unleaded petrol at an Asda forecourt came in at 145.9p per litre - and the most expensive was 158.7p per litre.

This marks a difference of around 13p per litre.

In terms of diesel, the cheapest price we spotted was 168.7p per litre and the priciest was 182.7p per litre - a difference of 14p per litre.

Morrisons

The cheapest unleaded petrol at Morrisons at the postcodes we checked was 145.7p per litre.

One Morrisons forecourt charged 161.9p per litre - around 16p per litre more expensive.

If you're a diesel driver, the cheapest price we found was 167.7p per litre and the most expensive was 185.9p per litre.

This is roughly an 18p per litre difference.

Sainsbury's

Sainsbury's charged 145.9p per litre at its cheapest forecourt for unleaded, while the most expensive charged 160.9p per litre.

It means drivers in different parts of the country that we looked at are paying up to 15p per litre more.

For diesel, the best price at Sainsbury's forecourts was 168.9p per litre and the priciest was 189.9p per litre - a 21p per litre difference.

Tesco

Tesco shoppers paid as little as 145.9p per litre at the garages we checked, going up to 159.9p per litre in some parts of the country.

This marks a price difference of 14p per litre.

If you're a diesel driver, the cheapest price we found was 169.9p per litre and the most expensive was 183.9p per litre.

This adds up to a 14p per litre difference.
