Asda's recently-launched Essential range has been causing a stir online. The line carries everyday items that most families and households would typically buy in their weekly food shop - from fruit and veg, to meats and snacks amongst other things.
Facebook, Twitter and Instagram have been inundated with pictures from shoppers showing off a full food shop captioned: “I can’t believe how much I got for £20!” The budget line isn't new per se, it's a rebrand of Asda's previous Smart Range - and most supermarkets carry similar lines including Morrisons and Sainsbury's.
But what's the difference between the Essentials range and own-brand lines from cheaper grocers like Aldi and Lidl? One shopper decided to look at how the cost of a weekly shop would compare between Asda’s new Essentials range and regular old Aldi, to see which works out cheaper, Birmingham Live reports.
Writer Rebecca Astill said: "It has blown my mind that an Asda Essentials shop of 20 items can be nearly £5 cheaper - allowing for some different sizes of packs. Although lots of items have clearly been price matched by the team behind Asda Essentials, there are a few products which cost much less, allowing Asda to run away with this one.
"The fish fingers, beef lasagne and wheat bisks have three of the biggest differences, however, sometimes this is because the portion sizes are different. That said, a few items are still cheaper in Aldi in case you have the time on your hands to visit two supermarkets. Yoghurts and bread are both still cheaper at Aldi.
"It’s fair to say Asda Essentials has knocked it out of the park with this one, and with 293 products in the budget line, including fresh meat, fish and poultry, bakery, frozen, cupboard staples and household products, it couldn’t have come at a better time with the cost of living crisis."
