We’re constantly reminded of the rising cost of living at the moment, but what does that actually look like when it comes to our weekly shop?
We found an order made on January 10 last year at Asda by one of the team here at Edinburgh Live, and compared the prices with those exact items today. As it turns out, the past year has seen a rise in the price of all the items.
While you might not be surprised to know that there’s been an increase in cost, the total overall change is staggering.

With the shopping list below last year, we spend a total of £27.04. To buy this exact same array of products today, you'd spend £37.65 - that's an increase of £10.61.
That's an increase of an eye-watering 39.2 per cent on our weekly shop. A spokesperson for Asda told us: ""Asda is consistently named the lowest-priced traditional supermarket in independent price comparison surveys carried out by Which? and The Grocer.
"There are a number of reasons why grocery prices vary over time and we’re focused on keeping prices on branded and own-label products in check.”
