'We are us again' - Thiago Alcantara makes Liverpool claim after 'unwanted' admission

Thiago Alcantara believes Liverpool "are us again" after he marked his return by helping the Reds drag their Champions League campaign back on track.

Thiago, making his first start in more than a month after a hamstring problem, was the game's outstanding performer as Jurgen Klopp's side secured a late 2-1 triumph over Ajax at Anfield on Tuesday.

Liverpool had opened Group A with a 4-1 thrashing at Napoli the previous week, a performance Klopp later regarded as the worst of his time at the club and which encapsulated a difficult start to the season for his team.

But Thiago is confident the Reds have shown signs of their true selves in victory in midweek.

“We came from a not very good, unwanted time," said the 31-year-old. "But we always believe in this team. The basis of this team is work, so we keep working, we keep improving things that weren’t right.

“And little by little we grow. Every day that passed, we grew. We had the opportunity to not play on the weekend and prepare even more for this game. And being the only game of the three that we could have this week, we made the most of it. I believe we are worthy of this victory and we created a lot of chances and controlled the game as well.”

Asked about what was discussed in the wake of the defeat to Napoli, Thiago added: “No, I think it’s our thing, something that happens practically inside the locker room, that is talked about, that gets better inside the locker room. But the main thing as a summary is that we are us again.”

Speaking to TNT Sports via SportsWitness, Thiago also underlined his commitment to Liverpool as he approaches the second anniversary of his arrival from Bayern Munich.

“It’s my team," he said. "It’s not just the players, it’s the fans. My family is here, they are already ultra Liverpool fans. So, after all, we end up becoming a family and we try to help each other.”
