WB: Violence in Murshidabad over Waqf Act; About 110 arrested

Violence erupted in Murshidabad over Waqf Act

Kolkata: During a violent protest over the Waqf (Amendment) Act in Murshidabad, over 110 people were arrested, Police said on Saturday, reports Dynamite News correspondent. 

As the protest grew more violent, the participants set on fire many vehicles, including police vans. Several protestors pelted  stones at security forces, and roads were blocked in Malda, Murshidabad, South 24 Parganas and Hooghly districts.

During the Police raids, over 110 people were arrested in Murshidabad.

Police said, "About 70 people were arrested from Suti, and 41 people from Samserganj in connection with the violence." 

The situation in these areas is still tense, but no untoward incident has been reported so far. 

Police has appealed to the people not to believe the rumours spread on social media.

"Patrolling in Suti and Samserganj areas is going on. Nobody is allowed to regroup anywhere. We will not allow any attempt to disrupt the law and order situation," said a Police official.
