Ways to travel to Spain, Portugal and Italy that avoid Dublin Airport and are even cheaper

There were scenes of chaos at Dublin Airport this weekend with long queues snaking outside the terminal building and horror stories of passengers "sleeping on the floor".

More than 1,000 passengers missed their flights out of Dublin and those who are due to fly this week have been warned to arrive hours early.

However, there are alternative ways to get away for your holiday abroad while avoiding Dublin Airport altogether.

The Irish Mirror have compared prices to some popular tourist destinations such as Spain, Portugal, Italy and Greece but flying out from Cork, Knock, and Shannon airports instead of Dublin.

From Cork to Palma

  • Ryanair flights from Cork to Palma, on the Spanish island of Mallorca, from June 8 to June 15 are €104 return.

Dublin Airport price comparison: Return flights with Ryanair from Dublin Airport to Palma on the same dates were almost twice the price, coming in at €205.

From Cork to Faro

  • Ryanair flights from Cork to Faro, in Portugal, from June 7 to June 15 are €148 return.

Dublin Airport price comparison: Ryanair flights return from Dublin Airport to Faro on the same dates are just slightly pricier at €155.

From Knock to Milan

  • Ryanair flights from Knock airport to Milan, Italy, from June 13 to June 20 are just €51 return.

From Shannon to Corfu

  • Ryanair flights from Shannon airport to Corfu, an island in Greece, from June 11 to June 14 are €128 return.

By ferry - From Wexford to Spain

If you are keen to avoid airports altogether, there is an option to go to Spain by ferry. This way, you can also skip the cost of renting a car in Spain and have the freedom to roam wherever you want once you arrive.

Brittany Ferries operate a twice-weekly service between Rosslare in Wexford to Bilbao in northern Spain.

Ferry crossings are currently booked out for the rest of the summer but there is availability from mid September.

The price for two adults return from September 21 to September 25 is €468.
