Wayne Rooney still speaks to his dead nan Mavis to 'help him'

Wayne Rooney still speaks to nan Mavis to "help him" through tough periods in his life - even though she died in 2002.

The former Everton star also said he used to sell cans of Coke and crisps at school, after getting them from the caravan his late nan had outside her house.

The footballer was incredibly close to his nan when she passed away shortly before he made his Premier League debut for Everton FC as a 16-year-old.

And he still looks for support from her now when he needs help most, the Mirror reports.

Wayne, 36, tells new Amazon documentary Rooney: “My nan’s buried right next to Goodison.

“She would have loved to see me play. She would have been the proudest woman ever if she had seen me play.

“It is probably more moments when I am a bit low I think of my nan. Still, to this day, I still speak to her."

Wayne explained it is "more like a prayer" and that he always feels he has protection from his nan.

Becoming more emotional, he added: "It’s a release for me in terms of I know when I am speaking to her, I know things will be okay. It’s just helped me get through some bad moments.”

Mavis would buy a young Wayne his football kits and he was virtually living with her at one point growing up as she lived on the same street in Croxteth.

Looking back, Wayne said: "I spent a lot of time at my nan’s house. She was the boss of the family. Very strong minded lady and someone who is sadly missed still to this day.

“My nan used to have a caravan outside the house, she sold drinks, crisps, the whole area used to go there. I used to get cans of Coke and Fanta and crisps and sell them in school and make a bit of money.”

Mavis, the mother of Wayne’s dad Thomas, appears in the documentary briefly in some home videos recorded on a camcorder. She has a cheeky grin similar to Wayne’s and waves at the camera at one point whilst sat in her armchair at home.

Rooney launches on Amazon Prime Video on Friday, February 11
